Men's Health Week: Men on the Move in Mungret striving towards healthier lifestyles
‘I’ve had to buy a new suit- my own one is falling off me’ - A quote from one of the male participants from Mungret Men on the Move who lost a staggering 18 cm from his waist circumference as part of the 12 week physical activity programme delivered by Limerick Sports Partnership through Mungret GAA Healthy Club. The 18cm equates to a 36% reduction in cardiovascular risk, including heart attack and stroke.
‘I got more out of this programme than I could have ever expected’
Men on the Move is a 12 Week physical activity programme aimed at adult men over the age of thirty to support them to become active, have fun and improve their fitness levels in a social group setting. A total of 40 men over the age of thirty took part in Men on the Move in Mungret, attending twice weekly for a one hour physical activity session led by Limerick Sports Partnership.
‘The most valuable thing I learned was the fact that there is an activity to suit everyone, regardless of your age!... Doing something small is better than doing nothing at all- this was the push I needed to start exercising. The group atmosphere and interactions made the experience very enjoyable’
Seventeen of these men enjoyed a trip to Croke Park on Saturday 10th June to celebrate the completion of the 12 week evidence based physical activity intervention.
Participants have highly commended the programme with several men saying it has changed their lives for the better- enhancing physical and mental health along with facilitating social connectedness.
‘There was a real sense of community spirit and fun’…
‘I enjoyed the group activities and social interaction each week- I’d never go out and exercise on my own- it is much easier in the group setting’
‘The well-being workshop opened my eyes to the importance of connecting with people in a meaningful way, you never know who might need someone to talk to’
‘The most Valuable thing I learned from this programme was that exercise need not be a solo enterprise, the group dynamic made exercise more fun and helped my mental state’ I really enjoyed how the camaraderie built over the course of the programme’
